The Sri Lankan Embassy in China in a press release today reported that they together with the National Gems and Jewelry Authority of Sri Lanka facilitated participation of 17 Sri Lankan exhibitors to the China International Gold Jewelry and Gem Fair in Shenzhen from 9 – 12th March 2010. As one of the most important international jewelry Fairs in Eastern China, Shenzhen Fair attracted over 500 jewelry makers and suppliers representing more than 12 countries.

Sri Lanka’s gems and jewelry industry through over 80 exhibition stalls, Sri Lanka Embassy pioneered the promotion of Sri Lankan gems and jewelry products in China with the assistance of National Gems and Jewelry Authority and the Gems and Jewelry Association of Sri Lanka.
Through the aggressive promotion and participation, Sri Lanka was able to raise its market share in this sector in China. China hails as the second largest luxury market in the world and soon become the top market in the luxury sector.
Shenzhen jewelry industry began to grow in 1980s with the open economic policies and the special economic zone initiated by the former President Den Xiao Pen. With the influence of the developed Hong Kong gold jewelry industry, within a very short period Shenzhen become biggest gold and platinum jewelry manufacturing, processing and trading based in China. With a vast low cost labour pool, technology and skilled workers from Hong Kong immensely supported Shenzhen to become home for over 2000 jewelry enterprises and with 110,000 skilled workers.
Now Shenzhen produces 70% jewelry products in China. The value of processing and manufacturing is amounting to US$ 6.5 annually.
During the event, the officials had fruitful discussions with M/s. Shenzhen Dawngshan China Ornament International Jewelry Exchange Co. Ltd of Dawangshan Plaza, Shenzhen and as a result of that, they have agreed to offer 2000 sq.m of Shop Space at a very concessional rate at the International Jewelry one stop sourcing center in Shenzhen that will be opened soon in Shenzhen.
