The Colombo Plan will provide capacity-building training in both drug demand and supply reduction for its 26 member countries in the Asia-Pacific region under its Drug Advisory Program in 1973 in the region to address the drug abuse. Colombo Plan General Secretary Patricia Yoon Moi Chia said that responding to the needs of the region, the Colombo Plan will be implementing eight regional and in country training programs from September to December.

Of these eight programs, four are regional programs Namely: Regional Conference in Drug Prevention Best Practices, Vietnam, 27 September to 1 October, in collaboration with the Standing Office of Drugs Control of Vietnam Regional Training on Drug Law Enforcement, Turkey, November, in collaboration with Turkish International Academy Against Drugs and Organized Crime of Turkey 11th Training for Women Counsellors on Treatment and Rehabilitation, India, 22 - 26 November, in collaboration with the TTK Hospital in India 5th Asian Recovery Symposium, Indonesia, December 6 - 9, in collaboration with the National Narcotics Board of Indonesia. She said that up to two places in each of the above two regional training will be available for Sri Lankans. All nominations have to be endorsed by the National Dangerous Drug Control Board of Sri Lanka. There will also be four in-country training programs for Afghanistan, Islamic Republic of Iran, Lao PDR and the Maldives.

They include development of case documentation and advanced training for treatment stakeholders and coordinators in Afghanistan, training of youths in the Islamic Republic of Iran and drug prevention education in the Maldives and Lao PDR, Chia said.
