No other sporting event captures the world's imagination like the FIFA World Cup. Ever since the first tentative competition in Uruguay in 1930, FIFA's flagship has constantly grown in popularity and prestige. FIFA World Cup is the most important international football competition. It is organised by the sport's governing body FIFA (Federation Internationale Football Association), with the finals tournament being the worlds most widely viewed sporting event.

A group of visionary French football administrators, led in the 1920s by the innovative Jules Rimet, are credited with the original idea of bringing the world's strongest national football teams together to compete for the title of World Champions. The original gold trophy bore Jules Rimet's name and was contested three times in the 1930s, before the Second World War put a 12 year stop to the competition. The most successful World Cup team is Brazil having won the tournament five times in and finished as runners up twice. Brazil is also the only nation to have participated in every World Cup to date. Germany (as West Germany) have won three times and been runners up four times runners up, whilst Italy have also won three trophies and two time runnersup. Both Argentina and Uruguay have won the World Cup twice.
